It is always easier not to write. Writing brings an obligation to share ideas, and hope beyond hope that someone will find those ideas worthwhile. After a series of sicknesses, the frantic pace of the holidays, and the increased workload of other projects, I put Food for Fatherhood aside because it was, I’ll confess, just easier.  For a time, I did feel guilty about not writing, but that passed as I came up with more and more excuses not to do it. But, as He does with everything, God called me back.Â
I don’t write about myself, at least I haven’t for a very long time. For the better part of decade, I’ve been writing about other people. When I did write about myself, it was surface level opinions on what I thought of a local beer. Nothing terribly soul searching. I will admit to feeling far more comfortable telling the stories of others than I am in telling my own.
Hiatus offers perspective, however. I’ve noticed that the stories I tell about food and family traditions are the ones people enjoy the most. I enjoy writing them, and will continue to do so as long as there are those willing to read. But there is more that I want to say.Â
Food for Fatherhood is not just about nourishment and tradition, but also about spiritual food. And, for me, Jesus Christ is the food that feeds my spirit. So, I’ve decided to create a new format for this newsletter.Â
Food for Fatherhood will be split up into two letters per week. The Saturday Letter will be those stories about food and tradition. These will remain 100% free for the entirety of this letter’s existence. They will be a mixture of the fun food adventures I’ve had in the past, as well as those I am currently having, all fed by the undercurrent of food making being an essential component of family life, and especially fatherhood.
The Wednesday Faith Letter will delve deeper into the spiritual food men and fathers need to make their lives more meaningful and enriching. I’m by no means an expert, but sharing faith is never really about having experts tell you what you should believe. It’s about being guided by the Word and those who share in it.Â
For three-months, between April and the end of July, the Wednesday Faith Letter will be a free addition to the Saturday Letters. Starting in August, it will become part of the paid monthly subscription. It is my hope that whoever is reading is finding encouragement, enjoyment, and learning to be willing to continue that journey and expand their Food for Fatherhood experience behind the paywall.
I will continue to develop Food for Fatherhood so that anyone who is a paid member will be get a whole lot more than just an extra letter a week. But, for now, two letters a week is a great place to start. So, the only question left is, will you join me?Â
