The days between Good Friday and Easter Sunday were the end of the world for the Apostles and followers of Jesus. They had watched Him go through untold suffering, and die upon the cross next to thieves. But, as John wrote: “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11: 25-26). He promised to return to them, but would He? All they had left was to believe. So they waited. And, on the third day, He came back.
Christ’s return marked the beginning of the new life he promised for us all. The darkness lifted and a new hope was brought before the world. “For God so loved the world he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). No one knew of the persecution ahead. Nor did they know of the goodness that awaited beyond this world. They believed in Christ’s promise. That ought to be enough for anyone.
Happy Easter.
